An 88-year-old man suffered major injuries when a vehicle struck him Friday afternoon in front of his Aptos home, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The collision was reported at 1:51 p.m. on Freedom Boulevard between Highway 1 and Mariner Way. The site is adjacent to the Aptos Pines mobile home park, in unincorporated Santa Cruz County.
The pedestrian was crossing four-lane Freedom Boulevard to get to his mailbox on the road’s south shoulder when he was hit by a 1997 Honda driven by a 29-year-old Watsonville man. The car then hit the mailboxes.
CHP officials said the victim was taken to Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz and then flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose.
The driver was not injured. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, CHP officials said.
