Some Christmas magic will make the holiday brighter for some bay area kids, who will be waking up to brand new bikes on Christmas day.
James Holbrook is one of the managers and Vans Cars and Trucks, and everyone calls him Jimbo. But he may as well be called Santa.
He says he came up with the idea 10 years ago.
“I acquired some bicycles, and I took them home. And I took them apart and then painted them all up,” Jimbo said.
Jimbo collects old bikes and brings them back to their old glory to donate to children in need. And once he’s collected enough bikes, he puts the word out on social media.
There’s a bike for a kid of every age, and come Christmas day, more than two dozen of them will see one of these under their Christmas tree this year.
He said, “This year, every child that entered the drawing went home with a bike this year.”
That means 37 smiles.
Some of the bikes this year are brand new – thanks to generous donors like Cindy Witham.
“My parents live here for the winter,” Witham said, “They are snowbirds from Maine, and I was just traveling down with them for help to get my parents down here.”
She told Spectrum Bay News 9 that through the move, her mother got sick so she’s here for the winter. She heard about Jimbo’s Christmas project, and she immediately wanted to get involved.
“It just gave me a little bit of mindset so I could just focus on something positive,” Witham said.
She said this is the perfect thing for her to focus on. While Jimbo puts the finishing touches on each gift, it’s now a waiting game.
They say they’d love to be a fly on the wall Christmas morning to see each kids’ reaction to this beautiful surprise.
Jimbo said the goal next year is to have at least 100 bikes to give away.
