DUMMERSTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Several people are hurt and in the hospital after a wrong-way driver caused a multi-car crash on Interstate 91 Sunday. The accident shut down both sides of I-91 between Exits 3 and 4 for several hours. The highway is back open.
At about 5:40 p.m. police got a call a pick-up truck was driving south in the northbound lanes. As a trooper tried to stop the car, the truck kept going and side-swiped the cruiser. Shortly after, the truck collided head-on with a northbound van, creating a domino effect. The van slammed into a third car, then two others swerved off the road to avoid collision.
The wrong-way driver was transported to Brattleboro Memorial with unknown injuries. State police are investigating if impairment contributed to the crash.
One of the four people in the van was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with serious injuries, and the other three were transported by ambulance to Brattleboro Memorial. They’re all in stable condition at this time.
The roadway reopened around 11:50 p.m.
