Several variants are circulating around the globe, with major ones being found first in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil. Because of the new variants we wanted to answer a few questions that would hopefully shed some light on how to mitigate the risk. Find more COVID-19 questions answered here.

Can I carpool or take the bus?

While the county remains in the purple, critical risk level, Teton County District Health Officer Travis Riddell recommends to gather only with members of your household.

A bus trip falls outside what the recommendation — which is not enforceable — indicates is safe, Riddell said.

“A bus trip is a prolonged period of time in a confined, enclosed, crowded space,” he said. “It is certainly, you know, one of the higher-risk activities many of us could be taking right now.”

On Friday, the health department alerted the public to another START Bus rider who rode multiple buses during their infectious period prior to testing positive for COVID-19. The health department alerts the public to such exposures so that fellow bus riders can see affected routes and monitor themselves for symptoms. Read about the impacted routes here

START officials have asked the public not to open or close any windows on buses, as they have figured out what they feel is the optimal airflow pattern.

Face coverings must be worn on all START buses, at all bus stops and shelters, and at any location where START bus tickets or passes are sold, according to the town of Jackson. Adding emphasis to a local mask requirement in place since July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has now issued a nationwide mask requirement on public transportation systems including rail, van, bus and motor coaches.

"Requiring masks will protect America’s transportation workers and passengers, help control the transmission of COVID-19, and aid in fully re-opening America’s economy," the town new release said.

This week, the U.S. Department of Transportation posted Frequently Asked Questions online with additional guidance and will continue to add information in the coming days. Locally, the national mandate requires face coverings to be worn on all START buses, at bus stops and shelters, and at any location where START bus tickets or passes are sold.

Like riding buses, carpooling with people from outside your household is not considered particularly safe. The CDC has said that carpooling should be done only when absolutely necessary.

For folks who need to carpool, the local health department has described the best way to sit in a car. If riding with a friend, sit in the back on the passenger side, then open the driver’s side window in the back (see graphic).
