A suspect in a domestic violence case jumped out of a moving patrol car Monday afternoon on southbound Interstate 5 in Vancouver, halting traffic and causing a backup of up to seven miles, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman had been arrested about noon on allegations of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence and interfering with a 911 call, sheriff’s officials said in a statement.
While she was in the back of a deputy’s car, she undid her seat belt and jumped out of the rear passenger side window while the car was traveling at “freeway speeds,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. She jumped out at milepost 10 on Interstate 5 near 199th Street in Vancouver, deputies said.
She was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital, sheriff’s officials said.
They didn’t say how the woman opened the window, how fast the car was going when she jumped or the extent of her injuries.
The deputy who was driving the car was placed on critical incident leave. The Washington State Patrol will lead the investigation into what happened.
The Sheriff’s Office has not identified the woman or the deputy who was involved.
Meanwhile, cars began to back up in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 around noon. Close to 3 p.m., a Washington State Patrol spokesperson said the backup stretched for about seven miles.
As of nearly 4 p.m., the agency said that backup had been cleared.
