A Florence-Penrose School District bus driver was terminated after striking a child for not wearing a mask on a bus, according to school officials.
Superintendent Dr. Brenda Krage said the district quickly responded to the situation in April by placing the driver on administrative leave to fully investigate the incident. Local authorities were involved during the investigation, as well as the child’s family, according to Krage.
Krage said the district is unable to give the age of the child involved in the incident.
“Our school community is experiencing a very unfortunate situation,” Krage said. ” We believe it is never okay to lay a hand on a child.”
Krage said the driver’s action justified termination of employment, as it goes against district policy and its values.
“We are very saddened by this incident,” Krage said. “Our goal every day is to transport students safely to school and back home, but that can only happen when everyone, including students and staff, follow the rules.”
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students ages 10 and older are required to wear a mask while in school or on the bus.
“We are currently working to identify next steps to help our drivers with strategies designed to support a safe ride to and from school,” Krage said.
