MOORHEAD — A bus driver is still on the job in Moorhead after a close call on the city's southeast side. The Moorhead School District confirmed it did take a number of calls today from concerned parents.

It was on a busy stretch of County Highway 52 - between Moorhead and Sabin - where a bus carrying eight students heading south passed a tractor despite traffic coming right at it.

"First and foremost, the safety of our kids is number one priority," said Moorhead School District Director of Operations Steve Moore.

The Moorhead School District owns and operates 25 buses. A further 57 buses are contracted. The driver in the incident works for Richards Transportation, which is contracted with the Moorhead School District to help pick up and drop off students.

"We call the contractor and say, 'we expect you to take the appropriate action to ensure this doesn't happen again' and check into the background of the driver to make sure there are no systemic issues, to make sure training was completed," Moore said.

Richards Transportation has been hauling Moorhead School District kids for four decades, and they say the driver in the incident has a spotless record and is, in their words, an "excellent driver." Still, the driver has been pulled from the route and assigned a different one.

Richards Transportation says their 40 route drivers take safety training and do ride along before getting hired. They must also have a clean driving record before getting hired.

WDAY News talked to Anton and Ashli Albrecht of Sabin, whose kids take the bus to and from school.

"A lot of times, you pass a vehicle like that and you think, 'oh, they are not coming very fast,' but you get half way around and they are coming a lot faster," Anton Albrecht said. "So you have to make a call. Do you stop, or get around them? It is hard for me to say she did the wrong thing, but you see that video and you think, what was she doing."
