BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A WTA bus ride took a frightening turn Wednesday when a woman stabbed another passenger in an unprovoked attack.

Bellingham Police Lieutenant Claudia Murphy says 44-year-old LaKisha Bolden became upset when she learned the bus on Old Fairhaven Parkway wasn’t headed downtown and insisted that the driver make an unscheduled stop.

Bolden appeared to be exiting the bus when she suddenly began stabbing another female rider.

The injured passenger fought back and was able to flee the bus to safety.

The bus driver and other riders also exited the bus safely but Bolden remained on board.

Bellingham Police arrived on the scene, closed traffic on Old Fairhaven Parkway and disabled the bus so it couldn’t be driven.

Negotiators were able to engage Bolden in conversation and de-escalate the situation.

Officers arrested Bolden on suspicion of 1st degree assault.

The stabbing victim was treated at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for non-life-threatening stab wounds.
