Americans buy more Ford F-150s than any other vehicle. So it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that thieves also steal more Ford F-150s than any other vehicle.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has released its annual Hot Wheels Report, identifying the vehicles most often reported stolen last year. It’s full of bad news.
Auto theft nationwide rose in 2020. NICB President and CEO David Glawe cites “the pandemic, an economic downturn, law enforcement realignment, depleted social and schooling programs, and, in still too many cases, owner complacency” for the uptick in thefts.
Top Ten Most-Stolen Cars in 2020:
Rank |
Vehicle Make & Model | Thefts | Increase from 2019 | Most Common Model Year Stolen |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Ford Full Size Pick-up | 44,014 | 13.0% | 2006 |
2 | Chevy Full Size Pick-up | 40,968 | 25.7% | 2004 |
3 | Honda Civic | 34,144 | 2.8% | 2000 |
4 | Honda Accord | 30,814 | 0.2% | 1997 |
5 | Toyota Camry | 16,915 | 8.0% | 2019 |
6 | Nissan Altima | 14,668 | 9.8% | 2020 |
7 | GMC Full Size Pick-up | 13,016 | 16.6% | 2005 |
8 | Toyota Corolla | 12,515 | 3.1% | 2020 |
9 | Honda CR-V | 12,309 | 21.9% | 2000 |
10 | Dodge Full Size Pick-up | 11,991 | 6.2% | 2001 |
The NICB also provides a state-by-state breakdown, which is full of interesting trivia. There were, for instance, more Toyota RAV4s stolen in Massachusetts last year than total cars swiped in nearby Vermont. The off-road-oriented, open-top Jeep Wrangler makes the top ten list only in Hawaii. Curiously, no European-built car makes the top ten most stolen list in any state.
Four Layers of Defense
The NICB recommends that owners follow four layers to protect their cars from theft:
- Common Sense — lock your doors, close your windows, don’t leave the keys in the car and park in a well-lit area
- Warning Device – use an audible alarm to scare away thieves and/or visible theft deterrents, like a steering wheel lock
- Immobilizing Device — Use a smart key or other wireless ignition authenticator “which prevents thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle.”
- Tracking Device – Invest in a telematics service or other tracking device so that, if your car is stolen, police can quickly locate it.
Those more advanced anti-theft technologies have grown common in new cars, which may explain the prevalence of pre-2006 cars on the list. The NICB explains, “they were some of the last models built without anti-theft technology.”
