MERCER COUNTY- (WVVA)- COVID-19 is placing yet another strain on the school system -- this time, it's the lack of back-up personnel. The need for substitute bus drivers has led to certain routes being cancelled on at least six occasions this school year.
"We have people who are sick for whatever reason, and we don't have the substitutes to be able to fill those positions. Yesterday (Tuesday) we had two drivers that were out and the positions could not be filled so we had to shut those buses down and not run those routes yesterday," Bus Operator, and Trainer, Greg Pruett said.
There are a total of 82 bus routes and 82 drivers in Mercer County, with only 4 subs. If one person calls out that can affect more than 50 homes.
"Those folks are going to have to find a way to get their child to school. Hopefully they can do so. But if you're not able to get your child to school that day it is an excused absences. Hopefully with the virtual learning and the remote learning we have right now you will be able to access it on a computer so that your child won't fall behind," Pruett said.
The need for these employees goes beyond Mercer County.
Governor Jim Justice justice says it's a statewide issue.
"Our state board of education is doing an amazing job recruiting people and everything to try to do what they can to fill these jobs, and fill this need but it's a real need, and it's a real problem, but they are working on it," Governor Justice said.
