Kentucky took a bus to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech game a few weeks ago instead of flying. We now know why. In a Zoom call with reporters, John Calipari admitted he thought Atlanta was only a four-hour drive from Lexington, not six.

“It was two things. First of all, at that time when we made that decision I thought it would be safer for COVID. No, it wasn’t anybody saying, hey, we’re doing this [for budgetary reasons]. I like the fact that we were saving the department money, but it was more based on safety and — are you ready? — I thought it was a four-hour bus ride. I did. And when they told me it was six hours, I go, what are you talking about? They said, it’s six hours. And I only learned that about four or five days before the bus ride and, you know what, I’m not putting it on — it was 12 hours in a short period of time we were on a bus.”

A long bus ride is quite a contrast from the chartered flights Kentucky usually takes to away games; freshman Devin Askew said he’s looking forward to getting back to that life.

“That bus ride to Atlanta was rough,” Askew said. “That’s six hours and we were just — I mean, there’s not much you can do on a bus other than sit there and watch movies and interact with your teammates but your legs get all swollen and stuff. It’s six hours of not moving, really. I mean, if we could have flown, I would have flown. I’d rather fly anywhere. On the way back, we all just slept. We were tired.”

Calipari confirmed the team will be flying to Cleveland for the CBS Sports Classic, not driving. Based on his remarks, it’ll be a while before they bus to a game that far away again.

“I’m telling you, I was on a bus that long one time in my life and that was in college, took a bus to the Poconos to work the Five-Star Basketball Camp. Maybe at Wilmington. We went to Asheville one time and we drove a bus and it was, oof. It was a bad bus too. So, that’s on me. It was my mistake, but I thought it was four hours away! And that’s how much I’m driving around. I’m kind of like the guy that doesn’t know how much milk costs, even though I do. I’m at Kroger more than you can believe.”

Dunkin’ Donuts, I believe. Kroger, not so much.
