Colin Chapman once famously distilled his recipe for building championship winning Lotus cars to just four words: "Simplify, then add lightness." Back in 1922, Chevrolet built a racing car so simplified that it left nowhere to add lightness.
This 1922 Chevrolet hill climb car, called a Sport Sprintster, is currently available for bid on Bring a Trailer. In totality, the car is little more than the basic components of an automobile bolted to different sections of a rectangular frame. Power comes from a 2.8-liter inline four, the transmission has just three gears, and the trunk and fuel tank are simply a wooden box and a metal canister attached to the back, respectively. While the car is more than ready to be driven, it would be best to do so rarely; The only safety feature the car can boast is that it has brakes.
The car is said to have competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1922. It was refurbished in the early 90s, and, believe it or not, ran in anger at the ultra-challenging hill climb course again in 1992. Those restorations and refreshments mean the car is far from all-original, but it is still very much in the spirit of an ultra-light early 1920s racing car.
The car is currently bid to just $8,800, a relative bargain for an inter-war racer. If you value simplicity above everything else, you might not find a better car on the market.
