Valley Metro will restart at least a dozen suspended bus routes when Gov. Doug Ducey's executive order to slow the spread of the new coronavirus expires on July 27.
Express buses will begin servicing routes in Glendale, Chandler, Mesa, Tempe and other locations as Valley Metro prepares for increased ridership.
"Now that the state is reopening and we have (more) people traveling to the downtown area, we've decided to reinstate those trips," said Valley Metro spokeswoman Brittany Hoffman.
Hoffman said Valley Metro has seen slightly more riders in recent weeks and expects higher demand as people return to work at offices and stores.
The transit company pared back transit services in early April when Arizona encouraged everyone to "stay home, stay safe, stay connected." Only 24 people were known to have died from COVID-19 when Valley Metro announced the service reduction.
Arizona's death count is now 100 times higher, with 2,434 people known to have died and over 130,000 confirmed cases of the virus as of Wednesday.
Valley Metro has made changes to protect the health of workers and riders in the community. Buses are cleaned in the morning and between routes in the afternoon, and they are outfitted with protective shields to separate operators from passengers, Hoffman said. Light rail trains, pay stations and railings are also sanitized on a regular basis.
