Police arrested a man on suspicion of sexual assault Thursday after a group of passengers on a passing bus spotted the assault in progress hours earlier and jumped off the bus to help the victim, authorities said.
Fidel Padilla, 41, was later arrested after police used witness statements and surveillance footage to help identify the suspect.
Prosecutors on Friday charged Padilla with rape of an unconscious person, and plan to ask that he be held without bail.
At about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to the 900 block of Market Street on a report of a sexual assault. Officers found a 60-year-old woman unconscious at the scene and had the victim transported to a local hospital.
Several witnesses told officers the woman had been sexually assaulted by a man in his 40s wearing dark clothing.
Witnesses said one passenger on the passing bus yelled at the assailant to stop what he was doing, and several passengers quickly got off the bus to intervene. The suspect had already fled by the time the passengers exited the bus, police said.
Police additionally obtained surveillance footage from the scene, and shared it within the department to help identify and locate the suspect.
Just after 1 a.m. Thursday, Tenderloin Station officers patrolling around the 300 block of Golden Gate Avenue noticed a man walking on the street who matched the description of the suspect. Padilla was detained and positively identified as the suspect in the attack, police said.
