School bus crash near West Point, Iowa - WGEM

LEE COUNTY, Iowa (WGEM) -- Deputies responded to the scene of a crash involving a school bus and a Chevy SUV in Lee County, Iowa, Friday morning.

The Lee County Sheriff's Department said it was called to the crash at 7:30 a.m.

Sheriff Stacy Weber reported just before 8 a.m. that county road X23 was temporarily closed due to the crash just north of Highway 2 near West Point, Iowa.

Lee County Deputies said a witness reported the school bus was stopped to pick up kids when the SUV slammed into the back of the bus.

Deputies said the school bus did have its stop arm out and flashers' on.

Deputies reported the SUV was totaled and the school bus sustained extensive damage to the back, however no kids were in the back of the bus at the time of the crash.

Central Lee Superintendent Andy Crozier said the driver of the bus and all the students on the bus were fine.

However, deputies said the driver of the SUV was life-flighted to the University of Iowa Hospital.

Deputies said that a witness reported the driver of the SUV appeared to be looking down at the time of the crash.

Deputies added they will subpoena the driver's mobile phone records.

The road was reopened by 9:30 a.m.
