After a car crash that left one Woodbury high school student dead and four others injured, community members have set up GoFundMe pages to help the families.
Around 11 p.m. Saturday, the car the boys were in veered off Settlers Ridge Parkway at Sundance Lane in Woodbury and struck a tree with such force the car split in half. Garrett Bumgarner, 17, died at the scene.
Four other 17-year-olds in the car — Connor Bro, Jack Mears, Andrew McKevitt and an unidentified driver — are all in serious but stable condition following the crash. All attend East Ridge High School.
The investigation into the crash is continuing, police said.
On Monday, members of the community placed hockey sticks outside their homes to show support of the families, and a memorial of flowers, signs and hockey memorabilia surrounded the site of the crash as people stopped to pay their respects. Others shared their support on social media, using the #OneEastRidge and #SticksOutWoodbury hashtags.
GoFundMe accounts were created to support the families’ medical and funeral costs. One is for Bumgarner’s family. Bumgarner was described as a “selfless son, compassionate brother and the most loyal of friends,” the page said.
Another GoFundMe account was established for Mears. A CaringBridge page created by Mears’ sister has also been updated daily detailing his medical condition.
