A man admitted to tying a dog to a car and dragging the dog with the car in Oneida County, according to District Attorney Scott McNamara.

The dog, Lilly, a 6-year-old Australian Shepard, had to later be euthanized.

Milton F. Lightfall, 50, pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals and is set to be imprisoned for two years, McNamara said Wednesday.

Lightfall admitted to taking Lilly from one of his housemates two days after Lilly bit him, according to McNamara.

On Oct. 2, a witness contacted the Oneida County 911 center about Lilly. The witness had been driving on Hill Road when the witness pulled over because they saw a car they believed to be disabled, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

The witness said they saw a white man with a black, tan and white colored dog that had a cord wrapped around its neck, according to deputies. The witness told dispatchers that the man standing with the dog said he’d found the dog. The man left after taking the cord from the dog’s neck, deputies said.

In pleading guilty, Lighthall admitted to being the man spotted with the dog and to tying the dog to the car, McNamara said.

When the man left, the witness saw blood on the roadway from the dog, according to deputies. The dog, however, ran away, deputies said.

Deputies later arrived, called the Town of Verona dog warden and tried to track the dog by its bloody footprints, according to deputies. The deputies could not immediately find Lilly.

On Oct. 9, a man brought a dog that matched Lilly’s description to Happy Valley Animal Hospital in Verona, deputies said. He was Lilly’s owner and told CNY SPCA investigators he’d been searching for Lilly since she went missing from his home in Madison County on Oct. 2, deputies said.

Lilly’s owner told deputies he’d seen on social media that an injured dog had been seen on Hill Road, so a friend took him to search for Lilly, according to deputies.
