A wanted parolee led police on a brief high speed chase in Vallejo in a stolen car, and died after hitting a tree Saturday morning, police said.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force and California Highway Patrol are investigating, Vallejo Police said.

Vallejo Police had responded around 6 a.m. to a call from a concerned person who reported a man slumped over the steering wheel of an idling car near Redwood Street and Chenin Blanc Place, Vallejo Police said in a news release Saturday.

When officers approached the car and identified themselves to the man, a 32-year-old resident of Contra Costa County, he “drove off and fled from officers at a high rate of speed,” police said, estimating the man hit more than 85 miles per hour in a 40 miles-per-hour zone on Columbus Parkway. Officers stayed 30 to 50 yards behind the fleeing man’s car, “after getting closer at one point,” police said.

The man’s flight covered about a mile and lasted less than a minute, police said. Officers attempted aid but couldn’t safely remove the man from the car, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, Vallejo police said.

The vehicle had been stolen in Walnut Creek, according to police. No further details were available about the victim, whose identity was withheld by police because his family had not been notified.
