The fatal shooting on a TriMet bus Sunday night in Southeast Portland occurred after an armed man shot another passenger who had been harassing a woman on the bus, according to a source familiar with the investigation but unauthorized to speak.
The gunman walked off the bus and fled, according to the source. Police have not said whether the woman was still on the bus when the shooting occurred.
Detectives have examined footage from video surveillance cameras on the bus and have distributed a bulletin to law enforcement with the suspected gunman’s photo.
According to audio of the 911 dispatch call, at 5:28 p.m. Central Precinct officers responded to what “looks like a shooting. One down on the street at 2625 SE Hawthorne Boulevard.”
Police have not publicly identified the man who was killed or the suspected gunman.
The bus remains secured as a crime scene in a TriMet lot.
