Deputies investigating reports of a stolen vehicle in Highland shot a 17-year-old from Bakersfield who remained hospitalized Friday, July 9, and also arrested an 18-year-old on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm.

Authorities were summoned to the area of Third Street and Waterman Avenue at about 6:43 p.m. Thursday, July 8, regarding a possibly stolen vehicle, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release. Deputies found it parked on the 26000 block of Hillview Street and occupied by several people.

They were told to get out of the car. The 17-year-old who had been sitting in the driver’s seat began stepping away from deputies and stopped following their instructions, sheriff’s officials said.

“While attempting to take the suspect into custody, a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” sheriff’s officials wrote in their release.

The department did not immediately specify whether the person shot by deputies was armed. Sheriff’s officials did not elaborate on why deputies decided to open fire in their release.

After the shooting, deputies immediately provided first aid to the wounded teen, according to the release. He was taken to a hospital, and was expected to survive his injuries.

Meanwhile, one man was arrested at the scene of the shooting on suspicion of possessing a concealed firearm, sheriff’s officials said. He was described as an 18-year-old Colton resident.
