A $377 million rental car center with room for 4,500 vehicles opened at Honolulu's airport Wednesday.

The Consolidated Rental Car Facility, or CONRAC, is centrally located, right across the street from Terminal 2.

"Visitors are gonna enjoy a much improved rental process with most customers being able to walk directly to their rental car, avoiding the long bus rides that were previously required," said Jason Haaksma, the group rental manager for Enterprise Holdings.

A consolidated busing system will transport the remaining customers.

"For our local community, and this was touched on earlier, the walkable CONRAC design and location is going to drastically decrease the number of buses circling in the airport. That obviously helps traffic, which we’re all mindful of, but it also lowers emissions for our environment," Haaksma said,

The 1.9 million square foot, five-story structure houses everything needed for renting a car from rental transactions to car washing and fueling.

Planning for the facility began in 2012 and construction started in 2016.

Now that the new facility has opened, rental cars temporarily parked in the airport parking structure will move into the new facility. About 730 parking stalls will be returned to public use.

Other recently completed airport projects include the Mauka Concourse at Honolulu airport in August and the state's second permanent federal inspection facility at Kona airport in October.
