Four pedestrians in Escondido were hit by the same car and killed Tuesday night, police confirmed.

The crash was reported on San Pasqual Valley Road at around 8:30 p.m., according to Escondido Police Department Lt. Scott Walters.

A man, woman, and two boys were walking when they were hit by a northbound vehicle, Walters said. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two died at the hospital, according to Walters.

The driver was identified as a 28-year-old woman who lived in Escondido. She was transported to the hospital and was not arrested.

Drugs or alcohol are not factors in the crash at this point, Walters said. Two witnesses said the driver smelled of alcohol and indicated she may have been on her phone at the time of the accident.

One of the witnesses said she works as a lifeguard and tried to give CPR to the female victim.

It is unknown if speed was a factor, according to Walters.

Walters said it was unknown if the victims were in a crosswalk, on the sidewalk, or somewhere else, but witnesses told NBC 7 the pedestrians were walking northbound on the sidewalk and were hit from behind.

Walters could not confirm if the victims were related.

No other information was available.
