The staff at First Student Rochester wants the graduating seniors of the Class of 2020 to know they care about them.
That’s why a group of bus drivers and staffers from First Student will pay tribute Friday afternoon in Dover to the graduating students in Dover and Somersworth.
“We’re going to bring 22 buses together and line up the buses to spell the Class of 2020 and then have the bus drivers stand six feet apart in a circle around the buses celebrating the students,” said Christopher Taft, the location manager at First Student Rochester.
Taft’s son, Dylan, is a senior at Spaulding High School in Rochester.
“On a personal note, with my son graduating, it’s been a very challenging time,” Taft said.
He knows just how hard it is for high school seniors across the state to end their academic careers without the traditional celebrations because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
School districts have been conducting remote learning since March, and it’s unclear when or if they’ll be any traditional commencement ceremonies for high school seniors.
“It’s very important that these seniors are recognized for all their hard work and all they’ve accomplished,” Taft said during an interview this week.
They decided to honor Dover and Somersworth High school students because First Student Rochester services those towns, Taft said.
The drivers and staff will also pay tribute to Rollinsford students, who attend Marshwood High School.
“A lot of these drivers for us have seen these students from elementary school,” Taft said.
A photographer for First Student is planning to use a drone to take aerial photographs of the celebration on Friday, he said.
“This is our gift to the seniors,” he added.

Carrie Eldridge, the lead trainer/driver at First Student Rochester, got the idea for the tribute when she saw another group doing it on social media, she said this week.
The company’s drivers and staff are determined to “embark on a mission to show the students some caring in these times of uncertainty,” Eldridge said.
She noted, too, that some of her more senior bus drivers have been transporting the students to and from school since they were young.
“It was very, very hard for us to stop driving our kids” to school when Gov. Chris Sununu issued the remote learning order, Eldridge said.
There will be no practices for the 22 bus drivers before Friday’s tribute, she said.
“But I have it all mapped out as to which bus goes where and what angle they have to park,” she said.
Drivers also plan to display a 10-foot banner during the tribute that reads “Congratulations to the Class of 2020 from all the drivers at First Student,” Eldridge said.
