GREENWICH — For the second time in a week, a car that was stolen in Greenwich was later involved in an attack on law enforcement, police said.
A Subaru was stolen from the Byram section of town last week near the entrance to I-95, and it later turned up in Westport, along with another stolen car from Naugatuck, Greenwich police said.
A Westport police officer came across the vehicles at 12:46 a.m. Friday, when a license-plate check of the two vehicles revealed they were stolen, Westport police spokesman Lt. Anthony Prezioso said. When police tried to pull over the vehicles, the spokesman said, they took off.
The stolen vehicle out of Naugatuck struck a Westport police car, according to Prezioso, but the officer was not injured. The three juvenile suspects in the car were apprehended and were later turned over to their parents.
The stolen car out of Greenwich fled the scene, he said. Greenwich police said Monday the Subaru was still unaccounted for.
It was taken from a residential block on Pine Street, a short distance from Exit 2 of I-95. The Subaru owner told police that there were no keys inside the vehicle when it was taken.
An Audi was also stolen Saturday from a residence on Round Hill Road in Greenwich, police said Monday, and it was later recovered in Waterbury.
Also on Saturday, an attempt was made to steal a Porsche on Edgewood Drive, police said. The engine was on while it was in the garage there, police said. In both of those cases, according to police, the ignition devices were left inside the vehicles.
A similar crime involving a car stolen from Greenwich took place last weekend. A Mercedes-Benz was stolen from Rockland Place in Old Greenwich shortly after midnight Sunday. It nearly struck a Bridgeport police officer who was approaching it in that city, according to Bridgeport authorities. And it was later involved in a police chase on I-95 in Norwalk and Westport, with speeds hitting 110 mph before the pursuit was broken off. A number of juveniles were apprehended in that case, according to police.
There have been other criminal incidents in the recent past in which cars stolen from Greenwich were involved in police chases and other crimes. More than 30 cars have been reported stolen in Greenwich this year, police said.
