A race track worker was killed Friday night in western Wisconsin after being crushed by a bus he was helping to clear from the track.

Edward Nicholson, 62, of River Falls, Wis., part of the Cedar Lake Speedway’s safety crew, died at the scene, according to the St. Croix County sheriff’s office.

The racetrack, located in New Richmond, was hosting its season-opener after multiple postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the events, Battle of the Buses, was a race in which school buses careen around the 3/8-of-a-mile clay oval track. As a bus was rounding the turn, it rolled and collided with another bus. The drivers were not injured.

Crashes are not unusual in these types of races.

Nicholson was attempting to clear the track when one of the damaged buses fell on him.

According to a report by racingnews.co, witnesses said crews had hooked chains to the bus to roll it back over. A chain became dislodged and the bus was dropped on the worker.

Nicholson was extricated from the wreck, life saving efforts were attempted and a Life Link III helicopter and New Richmond EMS, Fire and Rescue were called to assist.

The St. Croix County medical examiner pronounced him dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
