CARPINTERIA, Calif. - California Highway Patrol responded to a call regarding a vehicle that went off the road and was heading toward railroad tracks in Carpinteria.
The call came in around 5:02 p.m. on Sunday. CHP said the car was traveling on the Southbound side of the US 101 just north of Santa Claus Lane.
The vehicle reportedly drove off the roadway and crossed the railroad tracks, fortunately no trains were nearby at the time.
The solo driver of the car was transported to Cottage Hospital. It is unclear if they sustained any injuries from the incident.
CHP notified Amtrak that a car had struck the tracks. Amtrak reported that the track was a main line railroad and would need to be evaluated for damage. CHP informed them that the area needed to remain clear while they responded to the wayward vehicle first.
At 5:38 p.m., CHP said a train did end up passing across the tracks even though it was not supposed to. CHP said all future trains were temporarily stopped.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
