ANN ARBOR, MI -- The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (TheRide) is reinstating some bus services as businesses reopen, after months of reducing routes due to the coronavirus outbreak.

As services are re-established, TheRide is encouraging passengers to continue practicing social distancing during crowded peak travel times. The authority is making several requests for riders to help “flatten the rush-hour curve” by spreading out travel, especially if students return in the fall.

“Safety has always been our number one priority and we are committed to doing our part in this pandemic,” said CEO Matt Carpenter in a statement. “As more businesses and schools reopen, we know more people will need to use our service. We are asking for the community’s support in preventing gridlock and crowding during the commute. We have a few months to get ready for fall and the return of students, so let’s coordinate as best we can.”

TheRide requests the community, businesses and institutions consider these steps when reopening:

  • Encourage employees and students to continue to telecommute or work from home when possible.
  • Stagger work and class schedules to avoid same-time traffic.
  • Schedule start times outside typical rush-hours, especially outside 6-9 a.m. and 3:30-6 p.m.
  • Consider rotating staff and students on alternate days.
  • Encourage walking, biking, and carpools. Businesses can contact the getDowntown program about resources for alternative commuting options.
  • Supply employees and students with protective equipment for the commute.

TheRide says it’s continuing to take preventative measures for employees and passengers, including disinfecting high-touch areas, placing signs on buses, shelters and transit centers encouraging riders to spread apart, using exit doors, installing plexiglass barriers to separate riders from the driver, using protective gear and providing hand sanitizer.

The Washtenaw County Health Department has a list of guidelines and resources for businesses reopening online.
