MANSFIELD - A man suspected of stealing a car out of Lexington was in custody Tuesday afternoon after neighbors helped troopers track him down when he tried to flee.

The suspect crashed the stolen Honda Civic at Adams Street and Home Avenue after a pursuit by an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper who had spotted the stolen car in Mansfield.

The suspect fled on foot after the crash, only to be apprehended soon after due to community support, Lt. Amy Ivy, commander of the Mansfield post of the highway patrol, said at the scene.

"If it wasn't for the community and people being outside to tell us which direction he was running, that really was a huge benefit for us. The car was stolen and they had put that out yesterday and Trooper James Speicher dialed in and said, 'Hey I want to help find this car for this lady.' We thought we had it earlier in the day and it wasn't the right car. He comes across it this afternoon and the guy ends up taking off on him when he initiated a traffic stop and he crashed and took off running," Ivy said.

"As he crashed, the trooper's coming over the hill and he takes off running. It was the people outside that were helping us, with Mansfield PD and the community. It was definitely a great combined effort today," she said.

Neighbors on the street were happy to help.

One man said the suspect tried to steal his car as he fled from the trooper on foot.

The crashed car was lodged against a hill at the intersection of Adams Street and Home Avenue, the air bag deployed with front-end damage.

The suspect was caught nearby in a field off Hedges Street and Dale Avenue

Tuesday night, Speicher said the suspect, Trenton Phillips, 19, of Mansfield, is being charged with receiving stolen property of a vehicle, the 2013 Honda Civic; felony fleeing and eluding, and a marijuana charge.

Speicher said Mansfield police also responded and captured the suspect who ran from law enforcement for about three blocks.
