A Passaic County woman left her two young children in a sweltering car Friday afternoon for at least 25 minutes while she shopped at a Secaucus warehouse store, police said.

Fortunately for the girls, 4 and 2, a fellow shopper saw them inside the car in the parking lot at Restaurant Depot on Secaucus Road and called police at 4:05 p.m. The temperature at the time was 85 degrees. Inside the vehicle, the temperature was 140 degrees, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said.

Secaucus firefighters managed to open the car doors and take out the children, who were sweating profusely and crying, Miller said.

Yamelth Olivo-Rodriguez, 23, of Paterson, was arrested when she came out to her car at 4:30 p.m. She was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children. Olivo-Rodriguez was served a complaint summons and released from police custody.

The kids were evaluated at the scene, given fluids, and then they were taken into protective custody, Miller said.

“It’s difficult to believe that this has to be told, but children, nor animals, should be left unattended inside a vehicle, especially in the extreme temperatures,” Miller said.
