STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Compared to this time last year, the NYPD’s 120th Precinct is seeing a 133% increase in shooting incidents, and a 23% hike in robberies.

Officers with the St. George-based precinct, which stretches south to Rosebank and west to West Brighton, responded to seven reports of people being shot as of June 14, according to the NYPD’s CompStat data.

That’s compared to three through the same time last year.

Officers also have responded to 43 reports of robbery, compared to 35 at the same time last year. Included in that data is a string of bank robberies, which slowed after police arrested a 58-year-old man from the Bronx in March, charging him with four of them.

The Graniteville-based 121st Precinct, which encompasses New Springville, Port Richmond and Mariners Harbor, has seen a slight uptick in shootings, with four incidents this year and six people shot. That’s compared to four incidents and four victims at the same time last year.

Robberies in that precinct are down nearly 10%.

Three of the seven shooting incidents in the 120th Precinct, and two of the four incidents in the 121st have occurred since the pandemic shutdown, data shows.

Both precincts have seen three homicides so far this year, compared to one at this time last year.

CAR THEFTS

Police on the borough’s East and South shores this year have seen a spike in car thefts and items stolen from unlocked vehicles.

A combined 48 grand larceny autos were reported in the 122nd and 123rd precincts, as of June 14, compared to 25 at the same time last year, data shows.

Historically, those numbers are on pace to be the highest, year-end combined total in the two neighboring precincts since 2013.

A number of techniques have been employed recently to dissuade groups of teenagers and young adults from Brooklyn and the Bronx from targeting Staten Island, law enforcement sources have told the Advance/SILive.com.

Tactics including aviation units and license plate readers on bridges have helped track stolen cars to and from the borough, although it remains a cat-and-mouse game, given that victims often don’t realize their property is missing until hours later.

The vehicles often are recovered in other boroughs, in the vicinity of perpetrators’ homes, sources said.

Typically, the M.O. of those traveling by train, ferry and bus to the Island from other parts of the city is to take a joy ride, and swipe credit cards for late-night shopping sprees.

Other suspects, however, have been traveling north from Newark, N.J., targeting higher-end vehicles on the borough’s South Shore, sources told the Advance.

The NYPD’s 123rd Precinct is raising awareness against auto theft by asking residents to lock their car doors at all times, regardless if it’s parked on the street or in a driveway.

OTHER MAJOR CRIMES

The seven major crimes across Staten Island -- homicide, rape, felony assault, robbery, burglary, grand larceny auto, grand larceny -- were down 6%, compared to the same time last year.

Felony assaults were down 14%, reports of rape were down 11.5%, and burglaries were down 0.8%.

CHALLENGING TIMES FOR NYPD

Several of the shootings and car thefts across several neighborhoods occurred in the midst of both a pandemic shutdown, and civil rights protests touched off by the alleged murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

Staffing shortages within the NYPD were well-documented at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, then, more recently officers were moved out of their precincts to work massive and in some cases violent protests.

Additionally, officers have told the Advance/SILive.com that bail reform laws implemented at the start of the year have resulted in car thieves returning to the streets immediately after being arrested, then, being caught again.

Historic changes to the transparency of NYPD disciplinary records and the speed at which cops are investigated for misconduct were laid out in detail Wednesday by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
