LAS CRUCES - The South Central Regional Transit District announced Wednesday it will roll out a new "on-call" bus service in July. The bus route will be mostly fixed with some flexibility for residents who live near the fixed route.
It's a pilot project that will begin with these boundaries: the northern boundary of Doña Ana at Thorpe Road, Elks Drive as the eastern boundary, Main and Picacho on the southern boundary and the Fairacres neighborhood as the western boundary.
The SCRTD applied for funding from the New Mexico Department of Transportation and was selected from a pool of applicants, according to a news release from the organization. The Doña Ana County Commission approved matching funding for the project at its meeting Tuesday.
Passengers who need to use the on-call service to go to a medical appointment, shop, commute to work or to school can call the SCRTD customer service line at 575-323-1620 to schedule a pick-up about an hour or more in advance.
A dispatcher will let the passenger know the nearest pickup spot.

Buses will take passengers to any medical facility, school or job within Las Cruces. The buses will even be able to serve as connections to either other SCRTD routes or the RoadRUNNER Transit bus network. The buses can also be used for return trips.
Passengers can make daily or monthly appointments for regular pickups. The only limit will be vehicle capacity and schedule.
When it starts in July, the service will run Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m. Regular fares will be $2, but will cost $1 for youth, elderly, people with disabilities or Medicare card holders. Transferring to other bus routes is free. Initially, service this summer will be free.
A downloadable brochure will become available with more information at the SCRTD website, scrtd.org, by July.
