CHICO — Butte County residents got a head start on their Fourth of July celebrations as nearly 100 car owners gathered to share their love for car culture
Founded in 2014 and held monthly, “Chico Cars and Coffee” works as an informal car show intended to allow locals to showcase their vehicles and enjoy a day conversing with others.
On Saturday, the monthly gathering had one of its largest turnouts ever.
A mix of vintage, muscle, import and modern cars could be seen lined up in the shopping center parking lot located between E. 20th Street and Forest Avenue.
“Anything from new McLarens to junkyard pieces,” said Tedd Thompson, a Forest Ranch resident, and longtime attendee.
Thompson, who called himself a “car nut”, has been at every meetup for the last four years. He frequently brings out his 1991 Mazda Miata, one of the three cars he uses for shows.
“This is a free show, so you get a lot of people that don’t normally show their cars because they either don’t want to pay or don’t want to be judged,” Thompson said. “You can also come when you want and leave when you want.”
Two parking lot aisles down from Thompson, Oroville resident and first-time participant Dylan Ponder had an American flag sticking out the back of his 1969 Chevrolet c10.
The only material item Ponder owned before the Camp Fire.
“Everything else burned,” Ponder said.
He described the event as a nice way for people to “get out of and not be cooped up.”
Chico resident Matt Kanemoto, who attended with his 1948 Ford lowrider school bus, likely drew the biggest crowd Saturday.
The vehicle nicknamed the “Short Bus” has hydraulics for lowering the body and is covered with chalkboard paint, which is used to create surfaces to write on.
“When you come to a car show it’s not very entertaining for kids so it’s just for them to color on it and have some fun,” Kanemoto said.
Kanemoto bought the bus right after his son’s birth and planned to have it ready by the child’s first day of kindergarten. However, the project took him longer than expected.
“I ended up picking him on his last day of kindergarten,” Kanemoto said.
The next Chico Cars and Coffee event will be held at 8 a.m. Aug. 1 at 2009 Forest Ave.
