As he runs for U.S. Senate in Alabama, former Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville has been hoping to heat up in the race. However, things got a little too hot for his campaign bus on I-59 on Wednesday night.
According to the Facebook page of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Tuberville’s ‘The People vs. The Swamp’ campaign bus caught fire near mile marker 227 of I-59. Per Sean Ross of Yellowhammer News, Tuberville was not on board when the fire broke out.
The driver was able to pull off to the side of the road and get out safely. At this time, the cause of the blaze is not yet known.

Tuberville is currently battling Jeff Sessions in Alabama’s U.S. Senate Republican primary. A Cygnal poll this month revealed that Tuberville holds a wide lead on Sessions, with 55.1 percent of likely voters supporting Tuberville to just 31.8 percent backing Sessions. Whichever candidate prevails in the July 14 runoff will face Democratic incumbent Doug Jones in November.
Before delving into politics, Tuberville spent more than 30 years coaching college football. The Camden, Ark., native and graduate of Southern Arkansas has led four major programs — Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati.
Tuberville’s overall record as a head coach is 159-99, with his most successful stint coming at Auburn from 1999-2008. Tuberville guided the Tigers to an 85-40 record in his 10 seasons at the helm, leading the 2004 team to a 13-0 record.
