A man is dead and another is being treated for life-threatening injuries after the car they were in rear-ended a VTA bus as it pulled up to a bus stop on West San Carlos Street near South Buena Vista Avenue on Friday afternoon, officials said.

San Jose Police Department officers responded to the collision about 5:16 p.m., where a Mitsubishi driven by a 40-year-old male had crashed into the bus, Officer Gina Tepoorten, a department spokesperson, said in an email.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 30-year-old male passenger of the car was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A 36-year-old male passenger of the Mitsubishi was also taken to the hospital, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the bus was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and the two adult passengers of the VTA bus were uninjured and declined treatment or transportation to a hospital, according to Ken Blackstone, a VTA spokesperson.

Blackstone said the bus appeared to have only received minor damage.

Officers closed West San Carlos Street from Meridian Avenue to South Bascom Avenue and were expecting to reopen the road by 9 p.m.

This is the 25th fatal collision in San Jose this year.
