The list of vehicles contending for car and utility of the year just grew by four, as automakers confirmed a sporty Volvo EV, powerful Kia sedan and others will go on sale this year.
That raises the total to 42 vehicles eligible for 2021 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the year.
The additional candidates are:
For Car of the Year
2021 Kia K5, a sleek midsize sedan that will offer all-wheel drive and up to 290 hp
2021 Polestar 2, an electric sport sedan from Volvo’s stand-alone performance brand
For Utility Vehicle of the Year
2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e, a plug-in hybrid version of BMW’s midsize SUV
2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA, a car-like compact SUV
The list is likely to grow more as automakers finalize their plans for what vehicles will go into production and on sale in 2020.
More: Ford Mach-E, Cadillac Escalade, Nissan Sentra among contenders for vehicles of the year
The awards are presented by a jury of about 50 automotive journalists from Canada and the United States, including me. We have until mid-September to decide which are good or innovative enough to deserve a second closer look as semifinalists. We’ll evaluate those more closely in the fall, eventually choosing three finalists for each of the three awards. Winners will be announced Jan. 11 in Detroit.
