MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The United Way's annual Stuff the Bus event took place at Raising Cane's and the Bonita Lakes Mall Thursday.

Organizers of the event say that turnout has been going well despite the pandemic. All school supplies that are donated are disinfected and sorted immediately to stop the spread of COVID-19. People we talked to say this event is an important one because it helps students get prepared for the first day of school.Hank Holcomb, restaurant partner

“This need in our community hasn’t stopped and so there’s still so many kids in our community that don’t have the school supplies that they need,” says Hank Holcomb with Raising Cane’s. “Obviously it’s a crazy time, but I think it’s really important to still be able to do this to help out the kids in this community.”

“[The donations are] not going somewhere else, it’s going right back into their own communities,” says Kayla Powe, the summer intern at the United Way. “Half of the school children in our local public schools don’t have the school supplies and uniforms they need on the first day of school. Especially right now in times like these where everyone’s in different financial situations, we should all really come together and give the supplies to the children.”

The last day of the Stuff the Bus event will be held at the depot in Philadelphia next Tuesday.
