Tommy Tuberville’s campaign manager said the campaign bus that caught fire on Interstate 59 Wednesday night was used more for advertising than travel and said Tuberville has seldom been a passenger on it,
Campaign Manager Paul Shashy said the bus had been parked for two months before Wednesday night’s incident. He said the fire occurred on a test drive after some maintenance. The driver was the only person aboard and was not injured. The bus was destroyed, Shashy said.
The Tuberville campaign sent out an email this morning with a message from Tuberville asking contributors for $25 donations to help repair the bus: “Our campaign bus has been a pivotal piece of our campaign in defeating Jeff Sessions, and as we look forward toward November, we have to get it fixed,” .
The incident happened in DeKalb County in northeast Alabama, about 10 miles from the Georgia state line. Tyler Pruett, a spokesman for the DeKalb County sheriff, said foul play was not suspected.
Tuberville, a first-time candidate and former Auburn University football coach, faces Jeff Sessions in the July 14 runoff for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.
The winner faces Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat, in November.
