Investigators are working to determine the cause of a car crash that killed two people after their vehicle went down a ravine and into a retention pond.
The crash occurred Friday night at the NGC Theatre in Sharpsburg, where a 2018 Infiniti Q50 drove through a fence on the property, went down a 100-foot embankment, and landed in the water, according to Shift Commander Don Pickford with Coweta County Fire Rescue.
Rescue personnel worked to scale the steep embankment and extricate the two victims from the car, which was surrounded by water.
Crews utilized a Stokes basket to transport the victims up the ravine and into air life helicopters that had landed in the movie theatre parking lot.
Both the passenger and driver were flown to Atlanta Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries, authorities said.
The passenger was identified as a 38-year-old female from Grantville. The driver was identified as a 40-year-old male from Grayson, Georgia. Their names have not been released at this time.
The rescue process was an in-depth operation – spanning over 2 ½ hours – and required the use of 24 personnel combating extreme challenges including the heat, transporting rescue equipment down the 100-foot embankment and removing the victims from the car, which sat in around 4 to 6 feet of water, Pickford said.
“The outcome wasn’t so good, but this was a very successful operation for us for what we were faced with,” Pickford said. “We were pleased with how we came together as a team. We faced obstacles you don’t face in everyday calls, so it’s all taken from different slideshows of training and experience, which made this operation successful.”
Investigators said they’re still working to understand the cause of the crash. This story will be updated as new details are made available.
