ORLANDO, Fla. – A woman died Tuesday after she lost control and flipped upside down into a retention pond off Interstate 4 in Orlando, police said.
No one else was in the vehicle Tuesday around 8 a.m. when the car crashed into the water near the I-4 east ramp at Conroy Road, not far from the Mall at Millenia, according to police.
The woman was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center but later died as a result of her injuries, police said in an update later on Tuesday. Officials identified the woman as 23-year-old Jessica Desroins.
Two off-duty firefighters witnessed the crash and jumped into the pond, along with Orlando police dive team members, to help free the woman.
“She has a pulse,” Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said Tuesday morning. “We’re hoping she makes it.”
Video from Sky 6 showed the Nissan Versa submerged in the lake, with divers in the water.
The vehicle was removed from the pond.
Two lanes of I-4 east were closed in the area but were later reopened.
It’s unclear what caused the crash.
