“Dear PoPville,
I’m hoping your readers can help me out. I’m a current DC resident with a car registered in DC. I’m in the process of trading in my car and purchasing a used car from a dealer out of state. The DC DMV requires an in person visit to register a new or used vehicle. As we’ve all realized, the DMV is appointment only and when I last checked there were no appointments available through April 2021.
The dealer where I’m purchasing the used car will give me a 30 day temporary registration. After speaking to someone at the DMV on the phone, I was told I could do a “tag transfer” to my new vehicle, which normally requires an in person visit, but the person I spoke to said the dealer could just mail in the paperwork (including title, registration, proof of insurance coverage, and DC inspection). That being said, has anyone done this successfully? Does anyone else have experience registering a new car in DC without visiting the DMV in person?”
