GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Police think the same group of about 20 juveniles is responsible for more than 60 burglaries at car dealerships and cell phone stores in Grand Rapids since June.
Grand Rapids police on Wednesday, Sept. 2, said they need the public’s help to stop the rash of burglaries, mostly by calling 911 immediately if they see something suspicious.
Police say the juveniles, along with a handful of young adults, are stealing vehicles with the sole intent of using them to break into retail stores.
Since June, more than 50 vehicles have been stolen from dealerships, car repair shops and car rental centers. The areas most targeted are along 28th Street and Leonard Street.
The majority of burglaries and auto thefts have happened from 1-5 a.m.
“These offenders are brazen and should be considered dangerous,” Grand Rapids police Sgt. James Wojczynski said in a written release. “We have reason to believe, based on our investigations, that these stolen vehicles are also being used in other more serious crimes, including drive-by shootings. Additionally, reckless driving incidents involving these vehicles present a public danger and have resulted in serious injuries and fatalities.”
Police say they have arrested some juveniles involved with the break-ins, but they need help in stopping the rest. Detectives ask the public to call 911 about suspicious activity around car dealerships and cell phone stores.
Officers also are “monitoring” various dealerships during their shifts.
Police also remind staff at dealerships, repair shops and car rental centers to secure vehicle keys and the businesses at night.
Anyone with information about the burglaries can call police at 456-3380 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
