Target's car seat recycling event returns Sept. 13. Here's how to trade in a seat for a 20% discount - USA TODAY

Target's popular car seat trade-in event is coming back, but it's moving to a contactless format amid the coronavirus pandemic.

For two weeks – from Sept. 13 through 26 – Target stores will accept and recycle all types of car seats, including infant seats, convertible seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats, the retailer announced on its website.

In exchange for the old seat, customers will get a coupon for 20% off "one new seat, stroller or select baby gear item.”

In past years, shoppers brought the seats to guest services and were handed a paper coupon. This year, after dropping the seat in a designated box, they will get a digital coupon through the Target app by scanning a code.

Target usually holds the trade-in events twice a year but did not hold one this spring amid the pandemic. Since Target's first car seat trade-in program in April 2016, more than 14.4 million pounds of materials have been recycled, the company said on its website.

Stores will accept expired or damaged car seats, and the materials will be recycled by Waste Management, Target said.

Last September, Walmart held its first car seat recycling event but ended it nine days earlier than planned because of an "overwhelming response." Instead of giving coupons like Target does, Walmart offered $30 gift cards in exchange for the seats.

Walmart is not holding a car seat trade-in event this year, the retailer confirmed to USA TODAY. In a statement, Walmart said that for National Baby Safety Month, which is September, it is "launching some new resources for parents to help ensure that baby safety is easy, accessible and affordable, through all ages and stages."

Here are the steps to recycle a car seat that Target lists on its website:

  • Bring an old car seat or base to a nearby Target and drop it in the designated box inside the store.
  • Open your Target App to scan the code on the box. Talk to a Team Member in Guest Services if you need help.
  • Open your Wallet in the Target App and view "Extra offers" to find your coupon.
  • Click the green checkmark next to the offer and place your order online, or scan your barcode at the register.
