When the pandemic started to dash vacation plans, Dallas-based luxury coach Vonlane — commonly used for business travel between major Texas cities — offered a solution. Its new private charter service allows a family to book an entire 22-seat bus for a customizable route.
Catering meals and using on-board WiFi and streaming services, individual families, multigenerational families and groups of friends are booking “a private jet-type experience” on wheels to their second homes and rental homes — often in ski resort and beach towns, Vonlane founder Alex Danza says.
“Families of five go all the way to Colorado, and we’ll pick them up a month later,” he says, noting common routes such as Dallas to Vail and Aspen or Houston to Florida’s Rosemary Beach, Seaside and WaterColor. “People are leery of going to the airport and being in a crowded gate area.”
For the nine-hour drive to Florida’s 30A region, Vonlane sends two drivers who swap halfway through. Unless the travelers plan it, charters don’t stop — the on-board attendant sanitizes the bathroom after every use. The undercarriage has room for bikes, groceries, floats, chairs and other essentials. “The parents are working for a lot of the trip, and the kids are enjoying a movie, and they look up and they’re halfway there,” Danza says.
Pricing varies by route. Houston to Rosemary Beach, Fla., is $6,600 roundtrip. Coach holds up to 22 passengers. vonlane.com.
