ALPENA, Mich.— The Michigan State Police Alpena Post is reminding drivers to watch out for school buses. This week is National School Bus Safety week.

Motorists should come to a complete stop when the flashing stop sign is present. Drivers should remain at least 20 feet away from the bus after the stop is completed.

Lastly, do not resume driving until the stop sign is put away and the bus is in motion. Motorists are not required to stop when there is a divided highway.

Motorists can also face a felony charge up to 15 years in prison if a child is killed while crossing the road. Cameras are installed in most buses allowing law enforcement to observe drivers violating the law.

Simpson encourages drivers to be cautious when on the road and to pay attention to flashing bus lights.

Parents are also advised to talk to their children about bus safety when exiting the bus and walking in the cross walk. For more information, parents and drivers can visit www.michigan.gov/msp
