CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cleveland woman who created a virtual classroom school bus will tour the Cleveland streets to pass out 1,000 meals to those in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Operation Hope is a partnership between the Best Community Resource Center and the popular Ohio City restaurant Town Hall, which will provide food for the program. The Thanksgiving menu will include some traditional meals such as turkey breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, and mixed vegetables. Desert, bread, and beverages are included.
Best Community Resource Center executive director Kimberly Smith bought the bus in April. By September, she converted it into a virtual classroom. It doesn’t have regular bus seats, but it has six workstations with 8 laptops, two televisions, and a lot of school supplies.
“I had been praying for a non-profit,” Smith said. “I saw the bus and immediately knew it was the community resource center.”
The bus tours the areas of Cleveland neighborhoods like Collinwood and other communities such as Euclid. Teachers from the Euclid City Schools and Cleveland Municipal School District donate their time to teach the children and help them with virtual learning.
Due to COVID-19, families must schedule an appointment to get on the bus.
Currently, Smith is allowing visitors just once a week, but she plans to expand the program to five days, but first she needs more community partners and more teachers to volunteer.
Children who have already experienced working in a virtual classroom are looking forward to seeing the bus in their neighborhoods more often.
“They’re excited because it gets them out of that isolation of being in the house and back into the classroom setting,” Smith explained.
Smith says the bus is not just for children, but for anyone who needs help. Some high schoolers will be using the laptops and receiving help to fill out the FAFSA – a form completed by current and prospective college to determine their eligibility for financial aid.
Smith also encourages senior citizens to advantage of the resources the bus provides.
She used her own money to purchase the bus and supplies. It seems that she is in the giving spirit all the time, not just around the holidays.
“I have a giving spirit, and I love to give,” Smith said. “I want to help everybody if I can, honestly.”

Smith also encourages members of the community to register online for the “Clothes For Kids” clothing distribution that will take place on December 12-13 at 848 E. 185th Street. Clothes will only be passed out to those make appointments.
There are a total of eight workstations with laptops on the virtual classroom school bus.
