A former armored-car company guard is accused in a more than $1.7 million theft from his ex-employer’s truck outside an Atlantic City casino, authorities said Tuesday.
Dante McCluney, of Newark, was ordered detained on burglary, theft by unlawful taking and conspiracy charges, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Video surveillance showed the Nov. 5 burglary of the Rapid Armored Corporation armored vehicle outside Bally’s Casino, authorities said. McCluney was allegedly among three suspects who grabbed bags of cash from the truck and drove away in a gray Hyundai sedan parked nearby around 12:15 p.m., they said.
McCluney previously worked as an armed guard for Rapid Armored Corporation and handled the “AC ATM” run that serviced Bally’s, the prosecutor’s office said. He was familiar with the timing and procedures of the company’s service, it said.
“This was a brazen burglary of an armored car on a public street in broad daylight. Out of all the crimes I’ve seen committed in Atlantic County during my tenure, this incident harkened back to something out of the 1930s,” county Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said.
“Thankfully, we have a talented, hard working group of detectives who used old fashioned detective work to track down Dante McCluney, and then identify the other suspects,” the prosecutor added. “It should be noted that a substantial amount of the stolen cash has been recovered.”
Former colleagues of McCluney identified him from surveillance footage taken from the Atlantic City Boardwalk just before the crime, authorities said. He was spotted with two other men and the Hyundai before the group set off on foot near the armored vehicle, authorities said.
Authorities said the investigation was continuing and did not immediately release information on the other suspects.
Representatives for Bally’s and the armored car company could not be reached Tuesday night. It was not clear if McCluney had retained an attorney.
