CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 48-year-old man caused a four-car crash Sunday that killed one woman and left four others injured after the man sped away from police, Cleveland police said.
Anthony Howard of Cleveland faces an aggravated vehicular homicide charge. He remains at MetroHealth in critical condition.
The crash killed Paris Callaway, 20, of Maple Heights, according to court records and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.
Howard crashed into Callaway about noon on East 154th Street and Bartlett Avenue in the city’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood.
Shaker Heights police tried to stop Howard’s car on East 154th Street, according to court records. Shaker Heights police Commander John Cole did not return multiple messages about why police tried to stop Howard’s car.
Court records said Shaker Heights police turned around to get behind Howard’s car but did not chase because Howard was driving too fast.
Howard drove on East 154th Street and sped through a stop sign at Bartlett Avenue, where he crashed into a car turning left off East 154th Street. The crash caused it to spin out of control.
The second car ended up in the front yard of a nearby home. Campbell, who was sitting in the back seat of the second car, was ejected onto the road and later died, according to court records. The driver, a 19-year-old woman, was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
Howard’s car spun south and hit two more cars, according to court records. The drivers of the other two cars — a 63-year-old man and a 25-year-old man — both suffered serious injuries in the crash and went to different hospitals, according to police and court records.
Howard in 2012 was sentenced to one year in prison for speeding from Euclid police while drunk. It was his fourth drunken driving conviction, according to court records.
A judge also sentenced him in 2016 to three years in federal prison for his role in a large-scale cocaine-dealing ring.
