STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An irate rider threw iced tea at an MTA bus driver who asked the customer to wear a mask as required on public transit due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, according to sources.

Around 11 a.m. Monday, a male bus operator on the S93 route reported that a customer threw iced tea at his chest after the rider became upset over being asked about a mask near Narrows Road South and Fingerboard Road in Arrochar, according to a source with knowledge of the incident.

The rider, a woman, was wearing the mask when she boarded the bus on Victory Boulevard in Willowbrook. At some point during her trip, she lowered her face covering. When the driver asked the customer to raise her mask, she apparently became irate and tossed the beverage at him, according to a witness.

The bus was temporarily delayed due to the incident, but proceeded along its route, the source said.

“Assaulting a bus operator, a public servant who is keeping our city moving during a pandemic, is appalling, reprehensible and completely out of line with New York values," said Craig Cipriano, president of MTA Bus Co. and senior vice president for Buses, MTA NYC Transit. "The perpetrator should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Police were seen responding to the incident, but a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information was unable to immediately provide a report about the incident.

On Oct. 8, a male rider threw hot coffee at a female MTA bus driver and pushed her to the ground after she asked him to wear a mask amid the pandemic, according to police.

The alleged assault against the bus operator took place on an S46 bus at Castleton Avenue and Jewett Avenue in Port Richmond, officials said.

The driver asked the suspect to put his mask on when he stepped onto the bus. The rider allegedly ignored her request and headed toward the back of the bus, according to an NYPD spokeswoman.

The driver approached the suspect and he allegedly threw a hot cup of coffee at her face, causing pain, bruising and swelling to her face, neck and chest, the police spokeswoman said.

The suspect then allegedly pushed the driver to the ground, injuring her right knee.

A week later on Oct. 15, a man allegedly damaged an MTA bus at the St. George Ferry Terminal after he was told that he had to wear a mask.

A 57-year-old male driver was operating an S76 bus when the male suspect tried to board, but refused to wear a mask. The suspect was told that he couldn’t ride the bus. When the suspect exited the bus, he allegedly kicked the door, causing the window glass to break, a police spokeswoman said.
