An off-duty Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a brief gun battle with a gunman who approached and opened fire on him as he sat in his car in City Terrace, officials said Sunday.

The shooting occurred in the 800 block of N. Hazard Avenue at around 2:25 a.m., said Sgt. Wally Bracks, a department spokeswoman. The deputy was seated in the driver’s seat of his personal vehicle with two other passengers when a man walked up to his door.

The man pointed a gun at the deputy and started firing, Bracks said. The deputy was hit in one of his legs, but managed to pull out his gun and return fire.

The suspect ran away, and the deputy drove himself to a local hospital. His current condition was not known.

Neither of the passengers in the deputy’s car were injured.

It’s not clear what prompted the gunman to approach and start shooting at the deputy. He was identified as a man in his 20s, wearing a red sweater with black shorts.

Bracks said detectives were searching the area for cameras that might have captured footage of the shooting.
