SEATTLE — A man that refused to wear a mask on a Metro bus attacked the bus driver with a blue broom stick on Tuesday, July 27.
Court documents described a bearded man boarding the bus on Southwest Alaska at California Avenue Southwest wearing a single orange sock, carrying a blue broom stick and not wearing a required mask over his nose and mouth.
The bus driver used the public address system to remind the passenger that masks are required on the bus and “if you don’t want to wear one, you have to get off.”
According to the court document, the man ignored the announcement and refused to get off the bus.
At the next stop, the bus driver parked and walked to the back of the bus and told the man to get off the bus or she would call for help.
She walked back to the front of the bus, sat in her seat and didn’t move the bus.
Shortly afterward, the man picked up his broom stick, walked to the front of the bus, forced his way into the driver’s compartment and beat the driver with the stick five times.
One passenger confronted the man and two other passengers grabbed the man from behind and threw him out of the front door and onto the sidewalk.
The bus driver immediately closed all the doors.
The man used his broom stick to jab one of the bus door windows, causing it to shatter, and then he wandered away.
Authorities responded to the scene and, using the bus video footage, were able to locate the man two blocks away, wearing the same clothing, including the single orange sock.
The man, identified as Nathan Ritchie Calvin of Tacoma, 49, was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.
